Destination Wedding in Nepal: A Thoughtful Guide
From Our Journal / Destination Weddings
A Destination Wedding in Nepal
Sacred traditions, beautiful hotels and celebrations with room to breathe. A thoughtful guide to planning an Indian wedding in Kathmandu, Dhulikhel or Pokhara.

Close to tradition.
Open to something different.
Some wedding destinations are remembered for one spectacular photograph. Nepal invites a longer memory: a family arriving together, a quiet visit to a sacred place, flowers being threaded before the ceremony and an evening that leaves time for conversation.
For Indian families, a destination wedding in Nepal can bring familiar rituals into a different landscape. Kathmandu offers heritage and established hotels; Dhulikhel brings a hill retreat experience; Pokhara offers a lakeside stay. The right choice begins with how you want your guests to spend their days.
Pashupatinath, the revered Shiva temple beside the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, gives this editorial its opening image. For families who wish to include darshan or a prayer visit, it can be a meaningful part of the journey. A temple visit and a hotel wedding are separate arrangements: access, rituals, photography and any ceremony permissions must be confirmed directly with the relevant authorities.
One destination.
Three different wedding experiences.
Kathmandu: a considered starting point
Choose Kathmandu when the wedding needs to bring together several arrival groups, a full ceremony programme and time to explore the city. Begin with the room block and the spaces needed for each gathering, then consider journeys to Pashupatinath, Boudha, Patan or Bhaktapur around the wedding schedule.
Dhulikhel: a more intimate rhythm
A Dhulikhel wedding can suit families who want everyone to settle into a resort and spend more time together. The retreat atmosphere should be supported by practical decisions: a comfortable airport transfer, accessible rooms for older guests and a weather backup that feels as considered as the outdoor venue.
Pokhara: a celebration beside the lake
Pokhara works beautifully when the stay itself is part of the invitation. Allow space for a relaxed welcome, family meals and time around Phewa Lake. For guests travelling through Kathmandu, the onward journey deserves its own plan rather than being treated as a small connection.
We usually begin by building the wedding around one main destination. A second city can become an optional extension, allowing guests to choose extra travel without making the ceremony programme harder to follow.
Hotels to shape
your Nepal wedding around.
A beautiful façade is only the beginning. The useful questions concern rooms, ceremony spaces, access, catering and how comfortably the hotel can support the programme you have in mind.
The Soaltee Kathmandu, Autograph Collection

For a Kathmandu celebration with several gatherings, The Soaltee is worth considering for its established hospitality, landscaped grounds and range of indoor spaces. The wedding plan should distinguish the principal halls from smaller meeting rooms, then allocate preparation, hospitality and family functions accordingly.
Hotel Yak & Yeti, Kathmandu

Yak & Yeti brings together a central Kathmandu location and heritage character. Its halls offer different possibilities, from larger gatherings to smaller family ceremonies. A site visit should test the guest route between rooms, wedding venues and any proposed outdoor activity.
Dusit Thani Himalayan Resort Dhulikhel

Dusit Thani offers a different brief: a resort stay in the hills, with rooms, suites and villas rather than one uniform room category. For a smaller wedding, the appeal lies in letting the landscape remain visible, with restrained floral design and a clear plan for terraces, indoor gatherings and guest movement.
Hotel Barahi Pokhara

Barahi is an option for families drawn to Pokhara’s Lakeside area. Consider it alongside the full guest stay: the room mix, ceremony requirements, airport transfers and whether any additional rooms need to be reserved nearby.
Hyatt Regency Kathmandu — coming soon

Hyatt Regency Kathmandu remains in our venue guide for future consideration. It was listed as temporarily closed when checked on 29 October 2026. We would reconfirm reopening and wedding operations before including it in an available shortlist.
| Hotel | Published accommodation inventory | Planning context |
|---|---|---|
| The Soaltee Kathmandu | 282 rooms & suites | Kathmandu hotel wedding |
| Hotel Yak & Yeti | 241 rooms & suites | Heritage character in Kathmandu |
| Dusit Thani Dhulikhel | 72 rooms, suites & villas | Hill resort stay |
| Hotel Barahi Pokhara | 80 rooms in the current guide | Pokhara Lakeside stay |
| Hyatt Regency Kathmandu | Coming soon | Reopening to be confirmed |
Published inventory is not a promise of availability, a wedding buyout or a particular guest capacity. Confirm the room block, current categories and usable wedding spaces for your dates. Our Nepal wedding venue guide includes hotel facts, indoor and outdoor space notes, and arrival details.
From the First Welcome
to the Final Farewell.
A considered three-day wedding might begin with arrivals and a welcome dinner, continue with mehendi or haldi and an evening sangeet, and bring the wedding ceremony and reception together on the final day. This is a starting point, not a fixed formula: religious timings, hotel access and the family’s priorities should shape the sequence.
Dubo ko mala & meaningful ceremony details
Dubo ko mala, woven from dubo or durva grass, is part of some Nepali wedding traditions. For families who wish to include it, the garlands should be planned with the couple and priest so that their use reflects the ceremony being followed. Preparation, freshness and the moment of exchange are small details worth coordinating in advance.
Brass bells, marigold strings, floral offerings and carefully arranged ritual vessels can sit alongside these traditions. A Nandi installation may form part of a family’s temple-inspired design, with its placement discussed respectfully before the décor plan is finalised.

Décor details: flowers, metalwork & lamplight
Red roses and marigolds can be paired with metal birds, brass vessels and warm lamplight for a richly layered detail. Damru motifs and sacred metalwork should be chosen and positioned with the family’s traditions in mind, giving each element a considered place in the design.

Discuss the pandit, language of the ceremony, ritual materials, mandap, sacred fire arrangements and sound requirements early. The hotel must approve any fire, installation or production plan in writing. A temple-related ritual requires its own confirmation and should never be assumed to follow the same permissions as a hotel ceremony.
Traditional flowers.
A softer visual language.

An Indian wedding in Nepal does not need to lose the details that make it feel like home. A marigold welcome, rajnigandha strings around a mandap, brass vessels, warm lamps and carefully chosen textiles can create continuity between family traditions and the venue.
We begin with the architecture and the ceremony. In a heritage hotel, flowers can frame an entrance or courtyard without covering every surface. At a hill resort, lower floral arrangements and lighter structures can leave the view open. For a lakeside celebration, a restrained palette can carry from the welcome tables to the dinner.
Marigold, rajnigandha and lotus
Marigold can bring warmth to a mehendi or haldi through garlands, overhead details and entrance flowers. Rajnigandha lends itself to delicate strings, floral tassels and ceremony detailing. Lotus can become a focal flower for the mandap or ritual vessels where suitable flowers can be sourced in the required condition and quantity.
We confirm flower availability, substitutes, conditioning space and delivery timing before the design is finalised. The palette should allow sensible alternatives, so the finished celebration remains coherent if a specific stem cannot be obtained. Nothing essential to the ceremony should depend on an unconfirmed flower shipment.
Reusing selected arrangements between ceremonies can be thoughtful when the flowers remain fresh and the turnaround is realistic. We plan the movement, labour and placement in advance rather than assuming every floral installation can be moved.
How do we plan your wedding
and manage décor in Nepal?
Purple Grapes Events has an extended office in Kathmandu and an in-house production house in Nepal. This local presence connects the creative direction with the people preparing and installing the wedding on the ground.
We curate the complete wedding concept around your story, family traditions and chosen venue. Mood boards establish the colour palette and atmosphere; layouts help determine ceremony positions, furniture, entrances and guest flow. Where useful, 3D visualisations help you understand a more complex installation before production begins.
Our Nepal production team can coordinate décor preparation, installation, ceremony changeovers and the final finish with the planning and hotel teams. We work through venue access, materials, floral sourcing, lighting requirements, production schedules and weather alternatives together. The exact responsibilities and inclusions are agreed in the proposal.
For families planning from India or overseas, the aim is a shared brief and a clear point of coordination. Venue conversations, design decisions and guest arrangements should support one programme, with written approvals before the team moves into production.
A guest experience
that feels looked after.
The welcome begins before the airport. We bring together arrival information, rooming lists, pickup groups and hotel check-in arrangements so that the hospitality plan reflects the actual guest list. Older relatives, families with children and guests arriving late may need a different pace.
Travelling to Dhulikhel
Plan a private car, van or coach according to group size and luggage. The actual journey depends on the arrival point, hotel, road conditions and traffic. Leave a comfortable margin before any ceremony, and confirm vehicle access and drop-off arrangements with the resort.
Travelling to Pokhara
Guests may continue from Kathmandu by domestic flight or road. Compare the whole journey, including airport procedures, baggage arrangements, connections and the transfer to the hotel. A flight plan also needs a sensible contingency for delays; a road journey needs enough room in the itinerary to remain comfortable.
When guests stay in more than one hotel
Choose additional hotels by their practical route to the wedding venue, room availability and guest needs. We can coordinate room allocations, pickup points, shuttle timings and a hospitality contact within the agreed scope. A nearby address alone does not guarantee an easy transfer.
Entry documents and airline requirements should be checked for each traveller’s nationality and route before booking. Avoid sending one generic document checklist to a mixed Indian and NRI guest list.
How can we plan Indian and
international food in Nepal?
Purple Grapes Events works with a curated team of chefs whom we can bring from India for your wedding in Nepal. We plan the menus around your family’s tastes, from regional Indian meals to vegetarian and Jain menus, alongside allergies, fasting meals and other dietary preferences.
Speciality counters can include chaat, freshly prepared juices, chai and a fruit counter, as well as other favourites from home. We can coordinate specialist chefs and stall teams from India, and arrange ingredients and fruit through suitable local suppliers or from India where permitted. The final selection depends on availability, transport requirements and the hotel’s kitchen policies.
Before confirming the menu, we agree the cooking facilities, equipment, service timings and responsibilities with the hotel and catering teams. A tasting helps refine the dishes and presentation, including welcome refreshments and late meals for guests arriving after dinner.
Alongside Indian favourites, we can plan international menus and live counters with the hotel’s culinary team and specialist chefs where required. Welcome meals, celebration dinners and relaxed brunches can each have their own menu, balancing familiar dishes with different cuisines across the wedding.
What can our guests
see and do in Nepal?
Guests who would like to explore can add an optional outing or extend their stay. We help coordinate a suitable itinerary, guides and transfers within the agreed scope, allowing for the wedding programme and guests’ interests and mobility.
- Kathmandu — Pashupatinath and Boudha: plan a respectful visit around these important religious sites, checking visitor access and local guidance in advance.
- Patan: explore the historic squares, courtyards and traditional craft shops with a local guide.
- Bhaktapur: allow an unhurried visit for heritage architecture, pottery squares and local food.
- Dhulikhel: enjoy a relaxed hill-town stay and views when the weather is clear.
- Panauti: consider a guided heritage outing from the Dhulikhel area.
- Namobuddha: plan a quiet visit with respect for the monastery’s visitor guidance.
- Pokhara — Phewa Lake: enjoy the lakeside atmosphere, with boating arranged according to weather and local operating conditions.
- Pokhara — Lakeside: leave time for cafés, shopping and a gentle walk, especially for guests extending their stay after the wedding.
Keep excursions optional and confirm costs, opening times, entry requirements and accessibility before booking. Leave comfortable travel margins between outings and wedding events.
Begin with the guest list.
Then build the budget.
There is no useful single price for a destination wedding in Nepal. The main decisions are your dates, room nights, guest count, hotel category, number of ceremonies and level of décor and production. A smaller wedding with elaborate installations may require a very different budget from a larger celebration with a simpler design.
Ask for separate, itemised allowances for accommodation, food and beverages, venue access, décor, florals, lighting and sound, entertainment, photography, transfers, hospitality, planning fees and applicable taxes. Check payment currency, exchange-rate assumptions, inclusions and cancellation terms before comparing proposals.
Our first conversation turns the family’s priorities into a practical brief. From there, we shortlist hotels and develop a design and production approach that can be priced clearly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Indian family plan a destination wedding in Nepal?
Yes. Start with the guest list, ceremony requirements, dates and preferred destination, then confirm suitable hotels and current travel requirements. Purple Grapes Events coordinates the planning and décor brief through our Jaipur and Kathmandu presence, with responsibilities agreed in the proposal.
Can we have our wedding at Pashupatinath Temple?
A visit, puja and wedding ceremony are different requests. Any proposed ritual or ceremony must be discussed with the relevant temple authorities and priest, including access, timing, permitted spaces and photography. We do not treat a hotel wedding booking as permission to conduct a ceremony at Pashupatinath.
Should we choose Kathmandu, Dhulikhel or Pokhara?
Compare the room block, ceremony spaces and guest journey first. Kathmandu suits a city-based stay; Dhulikhel offers a hill resort experience; Pokhara adds a lakeside holiday element. The most suitable choice depends on your programme, guest needs and current availability.
How will Purple Grapes Events manage wedding décor in Nepal?
Our extended Kathmandu office and in-house Nepal production house connect concept development with local preparation and installation. We coordinate the palette, florals, mandap, furniture, lighting, layouts and changeovers with the hotel and planning teams within the agreed scope.
Can we use marigold, rajnigandha and lotus flowers?
These flowers can form part of the design, subject to sourcing, quality and seasonal availability. Confirm quantities, conditioning, delivery timings and approved alternatives before finalising installations, especially where a flower is essential to a ritual.
Can vegetarian and Jain wedding menus be arranged?
Discuss the exact requirements with the hotel kitchen before booking. Confirm ingredients, preparation expectations, service arrangements and allergies in writing, and use a tasting to review the proposed menu where possible.
How will guests travel between Kathmandu and the wedding hotel?
For Dhulikhel, plan suitable private vehicles and allow for traffic and the actual resort route. For Pokhara, compare a domestic flight with a road journey, including luggage, connections and contingencies. PGE can coordinate arrival groups, pickups and hotel communication within the contracted hospitality scope.
What happens if the main hotel cannot accommodate everyone?
We can explore additional hotels based on room availability, standards and transfer routes. The hospitality plan should define allocations, shuttle windows, pickup locations and a point of contact, with costs and responsibilities agreed in advance.
How much does a destination wedding in Nepal cost?
A reliable estimate needs dates, room nights, guests, ceremonies and a design brief. Compare itemised hotel and vendor proposals rather than a generic package figure, including transfers, production, planning fees and applicable taxes.
Can guests extend their trip for sightseeing?
Yes, an optional extension can include Kathmandu heritage visits, an outing around Dhulikhel or additional time in Pokhara. Plan guides, transfers, entry conditions, accessibility and costs separately from the essential wedding programme.
